World Water Day 2019 – Leaving no one behind

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. This year’s theme, ‘Leaving no one behind’, adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 is crystal clear: water for all by 2030. By definition, this means leaving no one behind. But today, billions of people are still living without safe water – their households, schools, workplaces, farms and factories struggling to survive and thrive. Marginalized groups – women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled people and many others – are often overlooked, and sometimes face discrimination, as they try to access and manage the safe water they need.

This World Water Day, 22nd March, is about tackling the water crisis by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind. Get familiar with the issues – why are people being left behind without safe water and what can be done to reach them?

On March 23, 2019, the Warsaw Waterworks organize an ecological picnic on the occasion of the World Water Day. On Saturday, March 23, 2019, in the Multimedia Fountain Park, from 11.00, residents of Warsaw will be able to enjoy a number of attractions free of charge.

William H. Lindley (1853-1917), at the 100th anniversary

The First Programme of the Polish Radio on July 23, 2017 at 21.00, within the framework of the knowledge contest about Warsaw, will join our celebration of the 100th anniversary of the death of William Heerlein Lindley.

Listeners will be asked two questions about the date of the first water supply to the citizens of Warsaw and location of the monument of our hero. Questions are easy and the answer can easily found on our site.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the Warsaw Water Supply Company Ltd - for inviting me (and my wife Pippa) to your splendid country for this special occasion – your 130 anniversary - and for the generous hospitality - we greatly appreciate this.

William (Bill) and his wife Philippa enjoy Warsaw water

William Lindley who was my Great Great Grandfather designed the water supply and sewerage system for Warsaw. This is one of his many European commitments/projects. It was supposed to be the most modern and most effective at responding to the expectation of the Warsaw inhabitants, which he developed and brought into practice in German towns – Hamburg, Elberfeld, Frankfurt on Maine. And it was.

When he signed the contract with Warsaw authorities in 1881 he was 73 and decided to retire and to pass all the duties on his eldest son, William Heerlein....
