We are pleased to announce that at the invitation of the organizers of the International Piano Festival Chopin in the heart of Warsaw, the Lindley Society “Societas Lindleiana” became the Honorary Patron of this most important cultural event of the capital this summer...
We are glad of this honor twice. First of all, for the year 2018 falls the 210th anniversary of birth of William Lindley, the founder of three-generation-family of civil engineers. The main celebrations of this event will take place in Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg, where he started his European career.
Secondly, the festival will take place in an extremely beautifully restored church of the Holy Trinity, in which: "in 1825, Fryderyk Chopin performed before the tsar Alexander I and received a ring with a diamond from him. The young composer sang in the parish choir and listened to sermons here" (writes Przemysław Lechowski, director of the festival).
For our Society the most important thing is that the organizers noticed and appreciated, apart from the obvious religious role of the church (God's Temple) and cultural role (superb acoustics), its modest secular role in the history of our city.
Preparations for triangulation works in Warsaw are illustrated in the page of the memorial album reproduced below by the collaborators of William H. Lindley on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the beginning of sewage and water supply works in our city. The central point of this page is the dome and cross of the Holy Trinity Church.
First concert by an Italian artist Leonora Armellini will take place on the 7th of July. |

The Lindley Association “Societas Lindleiana” celebrates in 2019 ten years of acitivity...
The Lindley Association “Societas Lindleiana” has been around for ten years!
On December 12, 2019, the Executive Board of the The Lindley
Society “Societas Lindleiana” (TL-SL)
met at a solemn meeting on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of our
organization. The National Court Register (KRS) entered us into the central
register of the Polish associations on November 23, 2009.
The application to the National Court Register for
registration was signed by a group of twenty one people, who are interested in
the history of Warsaw waterworks and sewage systems designed and built under
the supervision of four English civil engineers, William Lindley and his sons
William Heerlein, Robert Searles and Joseph.
In the past decade we have booked several significant successes. It includes, among others, the participation of our Board members in the preparation and publication in 2016 of the book Lindley plan 1912, and the placing a plaque commemorating the Lindleys at their English home in Blackheath.
In 2015, we managed to arrange invitation of Bill
(William V) Lindley to Łódź to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the water
supply, and in 2016 to Warsaw for the 130th anniversary of the water supply in
the former capital of the Polish textile industry.
In 2018, at the invitation of the organizers of the International Chopin Piano Festival in the heart of Warsaw, TL-SL became the Honorary Patron of this summer's most important cultural event in our capital.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the
establishment of TL-SL, its president Prof. Ryszard Żelichowski has prepared a
new edition of the monograph. The Lindleys. History of the engineering
family (see the next information on this).
The resolution of the Management Board adopted at the meeting today announced the convening of the General Meeting of TL-SL members in the first quarter of 2020. by-elections to its authorities and the Board's presentation for the coming years of a new program offer to a wider audience.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the
Management Board of the Lindley Society "Societas Lindleiana" sends
its members and supporters the best Christmas wishes and implementation of
plans in 2020, those important and those less important, in professional and
personal life!

Year 2019 brings the 160th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Lindley
(1858-1906), the youngest of three Lindley brothers. Ten years ago, we devoted
to him the text „On the
margins of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Lindley" published
in the Chronicle of Warsaw" (No. 1, 2009) included in our E-library under
the title "The Fourth Lindley".
We encourage you to read it again. Today we will only remind our friends and readers that he came to Warsaw in December 1888 to replace his older brother Robert, who decided to with his family return to England.
As a representative of the chief engineer William H„eerlein, he took over supervision of the city's measurements and the construction of sewage and water supply systems. He surrounded himself with Poles, participated in the current life of the city, co-financed and was a faithful reader of the „Technical Review". He enjoyed the respect of his employers and the sincere sympathy of those with whom he cooperated. Among the features that characterized him were: justice, goodness of heart and helpfulness for everyone who turned to him for help. In 1894 he married Emma Emilie Suermondt from Wroclaw. They had one son named Henry (Harry) William.
He died on April 20, 1906 at the Ober Ursel (Oberursel) hospital, only forty-seven years old. Joseph Lindley spent most of his professional life in Warsaw.
Lodz street, whose patron is William H. Lindley, has undergone renovation
and beautifying. The city authorities with great commitment and consistency
change the look of the streets in the so called “Woonerf program”.
Woonerf is a word borrowed from the Dutch language, which in free translation means "street to life" or "place to live." This term was invented in the Netherlands the 1970s for the design of streets to make them more friendly to residents and the passersby.

"Lindley
Street after the reconstruction was divided into two parts. From Narutowicz street to the building of the University of Lodz is an
urban courtyard, while to Węglowa street thre are roadways with authorized local traffic and
parking spaces.
The surface has been laid out of
stone and concrete cubes. The old, antique granite cube
has also been preserved.
The existing greenery has also been preserved. There were additionally dozens of new decorative trees and shrubs. We also installed benches, bicycle stands and rubbish bins on the street"
