In
March 2017, the President of the German National Committee for the Protection
of Monuments, the Minister of Culture of Brandenburg and the Minister of State
for Culture invited the volunteers to participate in the European Year of
Cultural Heritage in 2018. This
year's project takes place in Germany under the slogan "Heritage
sharing" and is an initiative of the German National Committee for the
Protection of Monuments, the Federal Government, federal states and municipal
associations in Berlin. The
Coordination Office expects about 500 projects and about 1,000 events in Germany
throughout the year.
The
ceremonial inauguration of the European Year took place on January 8, 2018 in
the Grand Hall of the Town Hall in Hamburg.
Six
schools connected in a regional network were given the task of becoming
acquainted with and interpreting the role of monuments and historic buildings
in the urban space. Teams
will learn about the cultural heritage of their city as part of the history of
North Germany and commitment to the protection of monuments.
William Lindley project. A man to start with
Klosterschule high school in Hamburg, as part of the project William Lindley project. A man to start with, focused on William Lindley, a British engineer who in Hamburg designed the first modern waterworks and underground sewers on the European continent, the first railway connection and engaged in the redesign of the port. Its results will be presented publicly as part of an exhibition organized by the Office for the Protection of Monuments in Hamburg.

The Family on the Lindleystreet in Frankfurt on Main. From l. to r.: Hanna Żelichowska, Karin Deubner, Ma Neubauer, Ursula Caspar, Beatrice Caspar, Alexander Caspara and Eugen Deubner
Day one – 30 August (Thursday)
|
From that day on we followed a master plan prepared by Eugen Deubner. We visited HESSENWASSER, MAINOVA and the municipal SEF (Stadtentwässerung, FFM), which supply the water, power and sewage respectively to the population of Frankfurt. Dr. Rödel, historian and retired monument preserver, gave us some information about civil engineering in Frankfurt between 1806 and 1914, as well as interesting information about the biographies of the Lindley’s in Frankfurt. Presentation took place in Goldstein Waterworks, where William and William H. Lindleys worked on the first modern water supply system for Frankfurt.
The same day was to the combined heating and power plant, Heizkraftwerk WEST. Extensive tour was conducted by a passionate man Mr. Joachim Siebenhaar. And there was a lot of history as well. William H. Lindley built his first electric power plant in Frankfurt (1892-1896), with Oskar von Miller.
Day two – 31 August (Friday)
|
On all locations we were treated with great esteem and were able once more to realize how important the Lindleys were also for this city.
After the tour we went to the city and met Mr. Volker Harms-Ziegler, an historian from the City Archive, who gave us brief historical tour of Römer and Zeil.
Day three – 1 September (Saturday)
|
This day was organized by Ryszard Żelichowski. We went to Evangelical Reformed Church - West (Deutsch Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche) on Freiherr vom Stein Strasse No. 8, (former Church of England) founded by William Heerlein Lindley. It was very disappointing since the church is gone and replaced by a big modern religious center of Evangelical Reformed Church. However, the commemorating stone has been preserved and exposed in front of a new religious center.
Next we went to former Blittersdorffplatz 29. It was another disappointment. The historical place is gone and the square is now called François-Mitterrand-Platz (he became a honorary citizen of Frankfurt a.M. in 1986).
We gave up walking through the Neue Mainzer Strasse (to No. 51, where the Getz family used to live). There was nothing to see either. The number 51 is incorporated into huge new Frankfurter Sparkasse and the street has become mainly a brick-canyon for the mass city traffic.
Later we took tram No. 11 to Lindleystrasse, and it was rewarding. It has been built-up with many decent houses and the East Harbour (Osthafen) has been renovated and decorated with a monument dedicated to the city-mayor Franz Adickes (1890-1912), under whose authority W.H. Lindley worked until 1896.
Departures, 2 September (Sunday)
Afteer the breakfast we went to our own destinations. We have planned next family-reunion for 2014 in England. Full report on the family-reunion you can see : E-library on this page |

The Lindley Association “Societas Lindleiana” has been around for ten years!
On December 12, 2019, the Executive Board of the The Lindley
Society “Societas Lindleiana” (TL-SL)
met at a solemn meeting on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of our
organization. The National Court Register (KRS) entered us into the central
register of the Polish associations on November 23, 2009.
The application to the National Court Register for
registration was signed by a group of twenty one people, who are interested in
the history of Warsaw waterworks and sewage systems designed and built under
the supervision of four English civil engineers, William Lindley and his sons
William Heerlein, Robert Searles and Joseph.
In the past decade we have booked several significant successes. It includes, among others, the participation of our Board members in the preparation and publication in 2016 of the book Lindley plan 1912, and the placing a plaque commemorating the Lindleys at their English home in Blackheath.
In 2015, we managed to arrange invitation of Bill
(William V) Lindley to Łódź to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the water
supply, and in 2016 to Warsaw for the 130th anniversary of the water supply in
the former capital of the Polish textile industry.
In 2018, at the invitation of the organizers of the International Chopin Piano Festival in the heart of Warsaw, TL-SL became the Honorary Patron of this summer's most important cultural event in our capital.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the
establishment of TL-SL, its president Prof. Ryszard Żelichowski has prepared a
new edition of the monograph. The Lindleys. History of the engineering
family (see the next information on this).
The resolution of the Management Board adopted at the meeting today announced the convening of the General Meeting of TL-SL members in the first quarter of 2020. by-elections to its authorities and the Board's presentation for the coming years of a new program offer to a wider audience.

Year 2019 brings the 160th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Lindley
(1858-1906), the youngest of three Lindley brothers. Ten years ago, we devoted
to him the text „On the
margins of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Lindley" published
in the Chronicle of Warsaw" (No. 1, 2009) included in our E-library under
the title "The Fourth Lindley".
We encourage you to read it again. Today we will only remind our friends and readers that he came to Warsaw in December 1888 to replace his older brother Robert, who decided to with his family return to England.
As a representative of the chief engineer William H„eerlein, he took over supervision of the city's measurements and the construction of sewage and water supply systems. He surrounded himself with Poles, participated in the current life of the city, co-financed and was a faithful reader of the „Technical Review". He enjoyed the respect of his employers and the sincere sympathy of those with whom he cooperated. Among the features that characterized him were: justice, goodness of heart and helpfulness for everyone who turned to him for help. In 1894 he married Emma Emilie Suermondt from Wroclaw. They had one son named Henry (Harry) William.
He died on April 20, 1906 at the Ober Ursel (Oberursel) hospital, only forty-seven years old. Joseph Lindley spent most of his professional life in Warsaw.
Lodz street, whose patron is William H. Lindley, has undergone renovation
and beautifying. The city authorities with great commitment and consistency
change the look of the streets in the so called “Woonerf program”.
Woonerf is a word borrowed from the Dutch language, which in free translation means "street to life" or "place to live." This term was invented in the Netherlands the 1970s for the design of streets to make them more friendly to residents and the passersby.

"Lindley
Street after the reconstruction was divided into two parts. From Narutowicz street to the building of the University of Lodz is an
urban courtyard, while to Węglowa street thre are roadways with authorized local traffic and
parking spaces.
The surface has been laid out of
stone and concrete cubes. The old, antique granite cube
has also been preserved.
The existing greenery has also been preserved. There were additionally dozens of new decorative trees and shrubs. We also installed benches, bicycle stands and rubbish bins on the street"
